Demand for Resource Allocation Technologies: Adoption of Hospital Surgical Management Software

چکیده
Health Information Technology (IT) is an important component of healthcare reform. Health IT holds the promise of improving quality while reducing costs. The broader IT literature frequently recognizes that IT payoffs depend on complementary investments in organization and capital. We build on this literature by evaluating the drivers of hospital surgical management software (HSMS) adoption. HSMS can improve operating room (OR) capacity utilization through both scheduling centralization and scheduling pooling. We draw on both the economics and operations literature to develop a theoretical model that reflects the technological and organizational issues underlying HSMS adoption. We posit that HSMS is complementary to hospitals’ organizational and capital investments. First, HSMS’ centralization effect is complementary to the scope of specialized surgical services. Second, HSMS’ pooling effect is complementary to the number of ORs. We test our hypotheses using a comprehensive dataset of hospitals’ characteristics and application-level technology adoptions – data not frequently available in other industries. We estimate proportional hazard models to test our hypotheses. We find that both factors are important HSMS adoption determinants. These results demonstrate the importance of understanding the mechanisms through with different types of IT create value. Our findings further suggest that efficient health IT policies require an understanding of individual technologies within an organizational context.

Explaining the Competitive Advantage of Enterprise Resource Planning Adoption: Insights Egyptian Higher Education Institutions
Organizations nowadays focus on, not implementing ERP systems, but also leveraging ERP systems as part of their digital strategy. They holistically address people, processes, and technology for a digital transformation. Meanwhile, higher education institutions (HEIs) are also facing an imperative need for the implementation of modern technologies to stay competitive and differentiate them as an...

The issue of management and allocation of resources in cloud computing environments, according to the breadth of scale and modern technology implementation, is a complicated issue. Issues such as: the heterogeneity of resources, resource dependencies to each other, the dynamics of the environment, virtualization, workload diversity as well as a wide range of management objectives of cloud servi...
متن کاملPriority Setting Meets Multiple Streams: A Match to Be Further Examined?; Comment on “Introducing New Priority Setting and Resource Allocation Processes in a Canadian Healthcare Organization: A Case Study Analysis Informed by Multiple Streams Theory”
With demand for health services continuing to grow as populations age and new technologies emerge to meet health needs, healthcare policy-makers are under constant pressure to set priorities, ie, to make choices about the health services that can and cannot be funded within available resources. In a recent paper, Smith et al apply an influential policy studies framework – Kingdon’s multiple str...
متن کاملCase Mix Planning using The Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution and Robust Estimation: a Case Study
Management of surgery units and operating room (OR) play key roles in optimizing the utilization of hospitals. On this line Case Mix Planning (CMP) is normally applied to long term planning of OR. This refers to allocating OR time to each patient’s group. In this paper a mathematical model is applied to optimize the allocation of OR time among surgical groups. In addition, another technique is ...
متن کاملLong Waiting Times for Elective Hospital Care – Breaking the Vicious Circle by Abandoning Prioritisation
Background Policies assigning low-priority patients treatment delays for care, in order to make room for patients of higher priority arriving later, are common in secondary healthcare services today. Alternatively, each new patient could be granted the first available appointment. We aimed to investigate whether prioritisation can be part of the reason why waiting times for care are often...
